The Coalition of Cultural Workers against the Humboldt Forum was there to support and stand in solidarity with the Initiative Hermannplatz in the struggle against another historical-revisionist architectural revival threatening Berlin’s communities. As both the partly privately-funded Humboldt Forum and Signa Holding’s proposed reconstruction of the Weimar-era shopping center in Neukölln make clear: there is a direct line between colonial entitlement and corporate entitlement.

We are and will be present in the streets and squares of Neukoelln following the recurrent racist attacks and the accelerated gentrification of the last years led by Deutsche Wohnen, Kuthe Gmbh, Pandion, Amazon (just to name a few), and now Signa Holding.

The castle facade reconstruction is how the whole Humboldt Forum disaster started.

Signa Holding, a company led by a CEO and stockholders with an extreme right-wing agenda, won’t trick us with another façade reconstruction, a long known real estate marketing tool tailored to appeal to city officials. It imposes investments without redistribution or sustainability; it capitalizes and colonizes visions of the past that overshadow gentrification and segregation.

Cultural workers and many others from the neighborhood already experienced the eviction from their living and working spaces.

The Signa Holding investment projects in Berlin must be given a full stop immediately and “Milieu Schutz” must be extended to all small businesses to support and maintain our neighbourhood’s economy.
